Rapeseed is an oilseed crop commonly known as Sarsoo (mustard) in Pakistan. Historical evidence suggests that rapeseed was cultivated as far back as 2,000 to 4,000 years ago. With the advancement of research, its importance and benefits are now well recognized. Rapeseed is widely cultivated in Pakistan and India. Apart from South Asia, it is also grown in China, Australia, Canada, Japan, and several other countries. In 1970, Canadian scientists developed an improved variety of rapeseed called Canola. The main difference is that traditional rapeseed contains higher levels of uric acid, while Canola has much lower levels, making its oil healthier for human consumption. Today, Canola is highly popular in Canada and Australia, while in Pakistan, rapeseed remains the dominant crop.

 Benefits of Rapeseed Oil.

also marketed as Canola oil) has many health and industrial benefits: Extracted as filtered or refined oil Used in vegetable oil production Lower in harmful erucic acid compared to traditional rapeseed Considered more beneficial than olive oil in some health aspects Used in medicines after extracting certain components Plays a role in bio-diesel production Additionally, mustard oil (derived from rapeseed) is used in households for cooking and externally for massage, skincare, and hair care. - Oil Extraction Process The oil is extracted in several steps: 1. Seeds are collected from farmers and transported to solvent extraction plants. 2. Seeds are crushed, and oil is separated. 3. By-products (meal and husk are used in animal feed and poultry feed. 4. The crude oil undergoes refining with salt and soda to remove impurities. 5. The refined oil is then supplied to the ghee and cooking oil industries. ---

 Agricultural Importance

Rapeseed is a low-cost crop requiring fewer inputs. It is sown in October–November and harvested in March–April. Its green leaves are also used as food (Sarsoo ka Saag).
Plays an important role in Pakistan’s GDP and can significantly increase production with government support. --.
 Method of Cultivation.
Prepare the field with irrigation and ploughing. Broadcast seeds evenly and cultivate again. First irrigation after 30 days (with phosphorus fertilizer). Needs 2–3 irrigations, or even one if rainfall occurs. Harvest when leaves turn brown and pods dry. Dry the crop under sunlight for 10–15 days before threshing.

Diseases and Protection.

Rapeseed is relatively resistant to diseases, but sometimes pests like aphids attack. Farmers use pesticides available in the local market for control. Canola requires slightly more attention compared to traditional rapeseed. --- Economic Role Contributes significantly to Pakistan’s edible oil needs. With proper attention, production can increase, leading to potential exports. Farmers require better seed quality, subsidies, and modern machinery to increase yields.

Nutritional Value:

Conclusion ...
Rapeseed is one of the most important oilseed crops for Pakistan’s agriculture and economy. With better policies, quality seeds, and farmer support, Pakistan can not only meet local edible oil demand but also become an exporter in the future. Both rapeseed and canola have unique advantages, making them valuable crops for health, industry, and the farming comm
